DINNER ON PHILANTHROPY AND SDG
“To exchange leadership perspective on how philanthropy can be engaged in the SDGs in Colombia and Indonesia”

- Indonesia has successfully achieved 48 out of the 67 indicators of the MDGs by the end of 2015. We have successfully achieved most of the MDGs indicators as compared to other Asia Pacific countries.
- The main challenge on implementing MDGs besides the achievement gap among provinces and districts / cities as well as among social economic status, are limited resources, not only from Non-State actors, but also the non-inclusion of resource mobilization from businesses and communities.
- Meanwhile for implementing SDGs, our biggest challenge, as the fourth most populous country in the world with 34 provinces and more than 500 districts and municipalities, is to ensure that the principle of ‘no one left behind’ is met. This is not an easy task to engage all the parties to take part in developing Indonesia, but I really believe that this can be achieved by building trust among all the parties involved
- To manage the implementation as well as to monitor SDGs, Indonesia has clustered the 17 goals, 169 targets and 240 indicators of SDGs into four (4) pillars. Implementation and grouping of the 17 goals is referred to as localizing SDGs in Indonesia. The four pillars refer to the three dimensions of Sustainable Development which are social development, economic development and environmental development, plus one pillar that covers Goal 16 and 17 on inclusive development and Means of Implementation (MoI).
- SDGs emphasizes human rights to ensure no discrimination to poverty alleviation in all of its forms and applies the inclusive principle and should provide benefit to all people, especially the vulnerable, and its execution should involve all stakeholders.
- Four platforms of SDGs are established in Indonesia to adopt the SDGs\’ inclusive principle. These platforms consist of Government and Parliament, Academia and Expert, Philanthropy and Business, and Civil Society Organizations and the Media.
- One of important stakeholders in our platforms is Philanthropy and Business, that has roles to advocate SDGs within business sectors, facilitate and implement the program, perform capacity building, and funding support. I am proudly sharing here that the Philanthropy and Business platforms in Indonesia has already shown their commitment to support the implementation toward SDGs achievement in Indonesia.
- The Philanthropy and Business platform in Indonesia has already collaborated among themselves by establishing communication forum for Philanthropy and Business Indonesia on SDGs on March 3rd, 2016. The main initiators are the Indonesia Philanthropy, Indonesia Global Compact Network (IGCN), Indonesia Business Council for Sustainable Development (IBCSD) and the SDGs committee of Indonesian Chamber of Commerce.
- This forum has already had 11 member of associations that represents more than 700 philanthropy and business organizations in Indonesia. I strongly believe this number will be increasing in the future. This platform has already organized themselves by having six working groups on the issue of tools, best practices, deepening engagement, emerging-promoting, localizing as well as advocacy and regulation that supported by several function teams, such as database and mapping, partnership and networking, funding and investment. The Philanthropy and business platform will have significant role to contribute on the development of Action Plan and Road Map of SDGs in Indonesia.
- Indonesia is considered successful in \’mainstreaming\’ SDGs in national development planning. As a reflection of the highest commitment and leadership of the President of the Republic of Indonesia to implement SDGs, a Presidential Decree has reached the final stage for enactment.
- In line with the role and function of the Ministry of National Development Planning, I myself as the Minister has been assigned by our President as the Coordinator of the National SDGs implementation. As we did in implementing MDGs, establishment of SDGs National Coordinating Team is being formulated. The team consists of a Steering Committee, Implementation Team, the Technical Working Groups and Expert Panel that will be supported by the National SDGs Secretariat. The four platforms that I mentioned earlier are represented on the Implementation Team and Technical Working Groups.
- The readiness of Indonesia in implementing SDGs as a transition from the MDGs has currently attracted world attention. We will have a show casing on the experiences of MDGs in Indonesia and our process for localizing SDGs in Indonesia the day after tomorrow on September 21st, 2016. I hereby would like to invite you all to attend our Side Event with the main theme on “Implementing 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: From Global Commitment to Local Action”. I will share more about what we have done and we will also learn from Mexico and Nigeria on their specific strategies to implement SDGs. Please come to our side event.
